NOAA: U.S. Cooler and Much Drier than Normal in January
Posted on February 8, 2011 Last month was the coolest January since 1994, according to scientists at NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) in Asheville, N.C. Across the contiguous United States, the average January temperature was 30.0 F, which is 0.8 F below the 1901-2000 average. And despite several large winter storms across the country, last month was the ninth driest January on record, much drier than normal. Average precipitation across the contiguous United States was 1.48 inches, 0.74 inch below the 1901-2000 average.

First Unmanned, Underwater Robot to Cross An Ocean Highlighted at Smithsonian Ocean Hall
Posted on January 12, 2011 The first underwater robotic vehicle - or "glider" - to cross an ocean is the centerpiece of a new exhibit in the Sant Ocean Hall at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. The exhibit opened on December 9. The U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS®) glider, operated by Rutgers University, carried out the trans-Atlantic journey last year, just months before scientists applied the technology to the Deepwater Horizon BP response.
NOAA Coastal Management Fellowship Opportunity
Posted on January 10, 2011 The Coastal Management Fellowship was established in 1996 to provide on-the-job education and training opportunities in coastal resource management and policy for postgraduate students and to provide project assistance to state coastal zone management programs. The program matches postgraduate students with state coastal zone programs to work on projects proposed by the state and selected by the fellowship sponsor, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Services Center. Unified Area Command releases report on oil monitoring data and analyses
Posted on December 20, 2010 On Friday, the Unified Area Command (UAC) released a report from the Operational Science Advisory Team that summarizes the results of the extensive sampling efforts conducted by the subsurface monitoring program. Federal On-Scene Coordinator (FOSC) Capt. Lincoln Stroh will use the findings of the report to direct further operations to find and recover oil.
