HIRES : 2015 Summer CREST outreach

HIRES focuses on STEM education which is an increasingly important part of the today’s workforce and economy. HIRES provides and encourages high-quality science and technology activities and initiatives in after-school programs.

This summer, HIRES at the CUNY CREST Institute ran from June 29 through August 14, 2015. This year  an outstanding 36 students participated, of which 11 were female and 25 were male. 13.89% were white, 27.78% were Hispanic/Latino, 13.89% were Black/African American, and the remainder (44.44%) were Asian.

The summer the program kicked off with an intensive orientation week that included bootcamp sessions in statistical analysis, how to think like a computer scientist, hands-on remote sensing, and physics.

For the formal program, students were enrolled in a City College course in the morning, EAS 213000, Engineering Geology, for which they received 3 City College credits and learned Matlab, Python, and GIS, and in the afternoon they participated in hands-on research with CREST faculty, research scientists, post-doctoral fellows, and graduate students. In addition, to the classwork and research, students went on site visits to the New York Harbor (Circle Line Cruise), National Weather Service Office at Brookhaven National Laboratory (Upton, NY), and Palymra Cove Nature Park (Palmyra, NJ). HIRES culminated with the CUNY Summer STEM Symposium, which was held on August 13, 2015 in the Great Hall at the City College of New York.

All HIRES students created and presented a poster of their summer research, and three HIRES research cohorts gave oral presentations of their work as well. All posters were judged by a panel of faculty and graduate students, and two HIRES students received awards for their posters as well.
