NOAA-CREST Center applauds the three bright undergraduate scholars for winning the prestigious NOAA Hollings Scholarship Award

About the Hollings Scholarship

The Hollings Scholarship Program, a national competitive award, which is provided through National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration (NOAA) Office of Education- Educational Partnership Program (OED-EPP)  is awarded to successful undergraduate applicants with awards that include academic assistance (up to a maximum of $8,000 per year) for full-time study during the 9-month academic year; a 10-week, full-time internship position ($650/week) during the summer at a NOAA facility; and, if reappointed, academic assistance (up to a maximum of $8,000) for full-time study during a second 9-month academic year. The internship, between the first and second years of the award, provides the Scholars with "hands-on"/ practical educational training experience in NOAA-related science, research, technology, policy management, and education activities. Awards also include travel funds to attend a mandatory Hollings Scholarship Program orientation, conferences where students present a paper or poster, and a housing subsidy for scholars who do not reside at home during the summer internship.

Many students from universities across the nation apply each year for this very competitive national award.  Some of the Hollings Scholars from other universities besides CUNY include - MIT, Columbia University, Penn State, Cornell, University of Miami, and Boston University.

Nadia Makara

A sophomore from Earth Systems Science and Environmental Engineering; received her Hollings Scholarship Award and will officially begin her award from fall 2011. She is currently working on Coastal Remote Sensing project with Drs. Alex Gilerson and Samir Ahmed. Her major areas of research interest are Water resources/quality, marine life/underwater research.

Crae Sosa

Another bright scholar of NOAA CREST and a Chemical Engineering major from the City College of the City University of New York, also received the Scholarship award this year. He is currently working on the LIDAR project under the guidance of Professor Barry Gross, Associate Professor of EE and CREST faculty member. Crae has always been motivated and interested in research areas that include – Satellites and Remote Sensing; Atmospheric Composition; Neural Network Computer Programming; Renewable Energy and Environmental Science.

Phillip Kim

An Electrical Engineering major from the City College of New York earned his Hollings Scholarship in 2010. His major areas of research interest is Signal/Image Processing. Phillip is ambitious about interning with the NOAA Commissioned Corps.  He will be mentored by Commander John Adler (NOAA CORP) and Mr. Douglas A. Perry, NOAA Office of Marine and Aviation Operations (OMAO).
